LOtC Mark now open for applications

19 04 2013

We would like to let you know about some work of the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, to tell you about a new accreditation scheme for schools, nurseries and other educational establishments which recognises and supports the development of learning outside the classroom across all subject areas.

We support the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom because of our shared belief that learning outside the classroom (LOtC) can have an enormous impact on enthusing, engaging and motivating your pupils to learn. Evidence shows that LOtC can raise attainment across all areas of the curriculum including core subject areas such as English, maths and science. LOtC is particularly effective in raising the achievement of groups with individual needs including SEN, boys and other children who may not thrive inside the classroom environment.

LOtC Mark now open for applications
Learning outside the classroom (LOtC) is most successful when it is an integral element of long-term curriculum planning and closely linked to classroom activities. (Ofsted, Learning outside the classroom, how far should you go? 2008)

LOtC Mark was launched in 2012 to help you use LOtC most effectively to raise standards and to demonstrate the effectiveness of your provision.

LOtC Mark is the first national accreditation for schools, nurseries and other educational establishments which recognises and supports the development of learning outside the classroom across all subject areas.

LOtC Mark benchmarks schools at either Bronze, Silver or Gold level, with guidance and support to help schools to progress through the levels and drive up the quality of their LOtC offering. The criteria measure the processes and procedures in place within a school to support and facilitate LOtC, and ensure that it is an everyday part of school life.
Benefits of applying for LOtC Mark:
 ■ A tool to help you make best use of LOtC to raise achievement for all pupils and across all subject areas.
 ■ An independent perspective to benchmark your provision at Bronze, Silver or Gold level and advise you on how to improve based on where other LOtC schools nationwide are excelling.
 ■ A framework for development to assist you to implement effective strategies, processes and procedures in order to help you demonstrate effective leadership and management.
 ■ Recognition for your achievements in integrating LOtC into everyday teaching and learning to help you celebrate what is great about your school compared with others.
 ■ An aid to help you gain and mobilise the support of colleagues, parents, governors and the community around your school.

The new round of applications for educational establishments wishing to gain the award is now open. Applications will be accepted until 1st July 2013. To register your interest in applying and receive full guidance on making an application email awards@lotc.org.uk
Accreditation schemes such as LOtC Mark can be instrumental in helping schools demonstrate effective leadership and management and quality of teaching to Ofsted. It could even make that vital difference between good and outstanding. We hope you will consider LOtC Mark and continue to develop your LOtC provision.
