Opportunity to train Forest School Practitioners

23 07 2014

As part of Derbyshire County Council’s Public Health Resource Fund we have secured funding to train a number of Forest School Practitioners in Derbyshire schools, community groups, settings and organisations who feel they could use Forest School as a way of improving among their participants:

  • personal social skills and behaviours
  • confidence, self-esteem and motivation
  • access to the outdoors as a learning environment
  • engagement with learning
  • physical activity levels and mental wellbeing

We are looking to train leaders to work with a wide range of age groups:  pre-school, primary, secondary, 18 to 24s and over 25s and would look for you to specifically target your Forest School provision to participants who could be categorised into one or more of the following categories:

  • participants who would benefit from opportunity to develop positive social skills and behaviours
  • participants who would benefit from the opportunity to develop positive self-esteem, motivation and mental well-wellbeing.
  • participants who would benefit from increased physical activity
  • participants who have a learning disability
  • participants who are looked after children
  • participants who are eligible for free school meals
  • participants who are in the youth justice system

Training typically takes around nine months to complete. In order to complete the training you will need to attend up to 10 training days, complete a 2 day outdoor first aid certificate, submit a substantial portfolio of evidence and run a 6 week pilot project. You will need to be willing to start your Level 3 Forest School Training before March 2015 (dates to be confirmed) the training will take place within Derbyshire (location TBC).  You will be expected to provide feedback on the numbers taking part in your sessions, the make-up of your group (male, female, age etc.) and complete before, during and after evaluations on impact and well-being and provide us with data and feedback so we can evaluate and analyse the impact of Forest School.

If this opportunity would be useful for your group please drop an ‘expression of interest’ email to forestschools@derbyshire.gov.uk stating your name, organisation, group or school, the kind of group you would target and we’ll get back to you in late September 2014 to discuss eligibility.
